Liberia/Prince Charles Johnson, was forced to resign

Liberia's newly elected president, Joseph Boakai, finds himself facing his first major crisis since his inauguration three weeks ago. On Monday February 12, his Minister of Defense, Prince Charles Johnson, was forced to resign, following demonstrations by soldiers' wives accusing the minister of a reduction in their husbands' salaries.

The start of Joseph Boakai's mandate was marked by turbulence. The resignation of Prince Charles Johnson, which occurred just days after his appointment, creates a vacuum within the government, which has remained incomplete since Boakai's accession to the presidency. This crisis also led to the cancellation of the celebrations of the national day dedicated to the armies, a first in twenty years.

Political analyst Abdullah Kiatamba on RFI this morning considers that this situation reveals chaotic management on the part of the new president. According to him, Boakai could have anticipated and resolved the conflict by dialoguing with the demonstrators from the start of their mobilization. This resignation and the president's delayed reaction raise questions about his ability to effectively manage crises in the future.
