Guinea-Bissau’s armed forces announced on Wednesday that they have taken control of state powers, suspended national institutions, and halted the electoral process, according to an official statement.

The High Military Command for the Restoration of National Security and Public Order said it had uncovered a major destabilization plot involving political figures, foreign nationals, and a “notorious drug baron.” The military authorities also reported the discovery of a weapons depot linked to the alleged scheme.

Following the announcement, the junta ordered the immediate closure of all institutions, the suspension of social activities, and the shutdown of land, sea, and air borders. A nationwide nightly curfew from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. has also been imposed.

The military stated that it will exercise state authority until conditions are restored for a return to constitutional order. It called on the population to remain calm, disciplined, and cooperative in what it described as a national emergency.
